Patton was as racist as any white soldier, and only accepted black soldiers in his units when trained tankers were desperately needed, in 1944. He was also a raging anti-Semite who called Jewish survivors of the Holocaust "lower than animals" privately.
The author is playing dolls with white U.S American soldiers who they clearly fanboy over, but who in reality would have likely called them a slur and spit on them.
Eugene would NOT have so many friends and would face much more discrimination than this.
