So, yeah, that piddly little generator is 5k, maybe 6.5k watts tops. To power a whole high-rise like that one, not even including the A/C and plumbing, you’ll need like fifty of those. The reason is weird but it’ll make sense once you think about it.
The wires inside that building’s walls are akin to water pipes. If you use water on the top floor, you need a bigger pump than if you use water on the bottom floor, right? Electrical engineers use ohm’s law, so it’s not a 1:1 comparison, but basically the wires will “eat” some of the current as friction heat. Toss fifteen people in a building all with TV’s and electronics and you’ll overload those two piddly generators in no time.
Granted, in an actual apocalypse, just those two should be fine… But not with a freaking lab, satellite dish, and automated turret system, wtf? Now throw in A/C and water pumps (can probably skimp on the hot water lol) and you’ve got a recipe for an overloaded generator. This causes a phenomenon known as ‘voltage droop’ and with a sufficient droop it can cause the generator to literally explode.
How do I know? Weeeeelllllll…
No, it didn’t blow up at my house, it blew up at the repair shop. Iirc 8 people went to the hospital, 3 with severe burn injures or lacerations. The shop was closed for 3 weeks to rebuild the roof, which burned. We didn’t intentionally overload it, there was a manufacturing defect, but yeah. Doooon’t do that. Those things can go f*cking nuclear.
