it wasnt level 40. the wolf was level 20, and do to all the training he did, which i presume is restricted to fresh characters, he gains stats that are higher than that of a normal level 10. so of course he could beat a single level 20 wolf (granted, these extra stats probably fall off at later levels and are mostly good for early game)
try reading rather than skimming next time
The young wolf he fought was level 20. The level 12 wolf became level 11 due to level decay of getting the brakes beat off him so hard. In many vr manhua and manga before level 10 you can go to a training ground and increase your stats up to a certain limit.
