The point is to block spam. Every new e-mail entered triggers a moderation hold, but once it’s released, you’re good to go.
The reason they don’t just use an ID is so others can’t figure out what your login key is unless you tell. A password wouldn’t work as a unique identifier, though, so they use e-mail instead. In effect, your e-mail IS your password. It’s a pretty smart system tbh; high ease-of-use combined with low cost. I really like this chat system’s simplicity, it’s something the internet often lacks nowadays.
