I’ll give you an explanation why women are usually called kings in these types of stories. In olden times, queens regnant (female monarchs ruling in their own right) were sometimes called “king” or used masculine titles because the role of “king” was historically defined as the supreme sovereign leader, regardless of gender. When women inherited thrones, they were often styled with the male title to signify their full, undisputed authority over the kingdom. For centuries, “queen” specifically meant the wife of a king (queen consort), not a ruler in her own right. When a woman like Mary I of England or Mary of Hungary ascended to the throne, “king” was sometimes used to clearly define her power. In many ancient and medieval cultures, the title of “king” was synonymous with “sovereign” or “ruler.” Female monarchs were, therefore, given the masculine title to emphasize that they held supreme power, not just the role of a spouse.
