As a student of history I’m annoyed when barons are portrayed as poor. They were filthy rich. Hell, even knights and squires were rich, as they were technically nobles with the privileges thereof.
All nobles put together, including knights, were only 1% of the population. Anytime they were short on cash (which wasn’t often), they’d just marry a relative to a rich merchant. No matter how much gold they had, they were desperate for the connections and protection any noble could bring.
You have to go as far east as Poland before you find poor nobles, where they were 10% of the population. Yes, that meant over 90% of the population was poor. Eastern Europe was the poverty zone. Still is, for that matter.
