Seems like mana chain is better for mediocre swordsmen and mana heart is better for the elites. Most people are mediocre or worse, so ‘everyone uses mana chain’ could easily become conventional wisdom as generations went by.
Mana chain is also better for the elites. Mana heart is only better for the top 1 in every 400 years or so
