He got an identifying document from a conveniently dead noble, who passed from natural causes after leaving his child in the supposed ‘knight’s’ care. For all intents and purposes he IS a noble, now. The only one who could disprove his claim is the central government, assuming they even keep a census. Not all governments did that until just recently; Ancient Rome and Babylon were huge exceptions, since they kept a census loooong before it was normal.
