Snake Immortal : The Tale of a Snake’s Cultivation to Immortality Chapter 59

The villagers trying to strike down a cultivator reminds of something from a story on Sufficient Velocity called The Path Unending. (It's not a spoiler, for the record.)

At one point, the protagonists find out that a group of common farmers have managed to kill a house-sized Spirit Beast mole all by themselves, after the local sect repeatedly ignored their requests for help.

Knowing that mortal iron couldn't pierce the mole's hide, they scavenged beaks, claws, and teeth from dead Spirit Beasts to use as spear tips. They laid out poisoned food to weaken it, set traps that they could herd it into, and prepared clay jars full of things like lye and concentrated pepper oil to throw in its eyes and mouth.

It was messy, grueling and risky. Several parts of their plan failed outright. But in the end, a few dozen farmers managed to kill a Spirit Beast that, according to all common wisdom, would have needed a full squad of cultivators to defeat.

And then, those farmers dragged the corpse deep into the forest for the scavengers to feast on, hid their makeshift weapons in a cave, and swore each other to secrecy.

Because cultivators need mortals to think that they're helpless in the face of supernatural beings. As long as people accept that as an immutable truth, even the weakest cultivator can do as he pleases to his lessers - and that's a perk of sect membership that helps draw in new members. If the peasants think that resistance is futile, then they're less likely to fight back.

And of course, the methods the farmers used to bring down that Spirit Beast could be adapted for use against a low-grade cultivator quite easily...
