Depending on the fiction, using natural mana has its own limits, too.
You’d be dependent on the density of the surrounding mana, which may be too thick or too thin in certain locations.
Also (again, depending on the fiction), often, natural mana is somewhat restrictive in how quickly one can gather it for stronger spells, and it can change in essence depending on the location, sometimes becoming wild and unpredictable.
Using one’s own mana is far more reliable and a much better habit to form. He just needs to resolve the problem with why he can’t contain much within his own body.
You could say he can’t contain much because he’s currently made out of paper. He isn’t developed enough to support magic so he’s stuck relying on innate talent until he does some conditioning.
It’s pretty obvious his low mana pool is because of his small and fragile frame. He’s nine years old though so you can’t really expect much else. I just hope as time goes on the author follows common sense and has roen build a proper foundation for his magic instead of having him as like a 20 year old prissy little femboy. People tend to forget that magic circuits are entirely dependent on the body and you can’t have a powerful mage that’s anorexic and made out of paper just because you’re concerned with how “pretty” he is. At that point you’re completely ignoring logic. Either way it’s a really great series so I hope it doesn’t go downhill.
