Fun fact: fake smiling releases endorphins, which makes you feel happier. However, if you have endorphins while feeling sad, it’ll cause a paradoxical effect – you’ll get depressed and may want to die!

Uhh, maybe that wasn’t such a ‘fun’ fact.

(TL;DR below)

Anyway, in all seriousness, this is rooted in two biological features. One is called ‘homeostasis’ and the other is called ‘decompensation.’ When the body’s homeostasis is disturbed by conflicting emotional norms, it’ll re-regulate the chemicals used to produce those emotions, resulting in a new homeostatic norm. If you keep acting happy when you’re sad, the homeostatic norm will keep dropping, making you sadder and sadder, until eventually you can’t fake it anymore. At this point, ‘decompensation’ happens. The divergence between your mental state and physical state is too large, so the body suddenly stops trying to reregulate your emotions, and it all comes crashing down. This is often referred to as an ’emotional break’ or a ‘mental breakdown.’

This is why people who fake smile tend to be depressed. If you’re sad, stop acting happy. It’s making you feel worse. Literally.
