    I really don't know where the leather armor trope came from. It wasn't really a thing outside steppe nomads. A gambeson or linothorax made of layers of cloth was what you wore if you couldn't afford proper metal. 'Studded' leather armor in games seems to have been based on brigandines, aka coat of plates, by someone who didn't know what he was looking at.

    Fun fact: Some preferred a brigandine over a cuirass because it was easier to put on and off, being worn like a jacket instead of strapped on with a harness. If you wore it with the opening in the front you could even put it on yourself, although it would offer less protection that way. Good luck putting on a suit of plate armor solo.
