Its really dumb that they named the ‘unchangeable’ magic, “open-source magic”. When one of the main qualities of open-source is that anyone can alter it.

I think it’s due to the fact anyone can view the magic and know what it does that’s why they said duels are usually about predicting

The main quality and definition of open-source is that its internal structure is visible and easily known. Not all open-source projects accept public changes, nor do they always legally allow unauthorised copying and alteration.
In areas where there are well-established open-source projects, they’re often already thoroughly developed, highly optimised, and heavily depended upon, to the point that any alterations have to be very carefully considered and are often thrown out.
And, as stated, any alterations would then become public knowledge.

This “Open-source magic” isn’t “unchangeable”; That’d mean there’s absolutely zero magical research and progression.
Simply that battles using it means that each spellcaster knows the internal structure of the opponent’s spells, and has to fight accordingly.
However, the MC is using “proprietary” magic, something that’s not published anywhere publicly accessible and that only he has the authority to use; thus, his spells are foreign to his opponent, giving him an unfair advantage.
